JOB SUMMARY:
To provide professional and clinical leadership for staff working in the campus/assigned area. This role ensures effective day to day co-ordination and management across the hospital/assigned setting, working collaboratively with the Medical Directorate and the wider Health sector.
TASKS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
LEADERSHIP
Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization
Act as an effective role model by demonstrating high levels of clinical competence.
Oversee the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing practice within the specialty. Advocate on behalf of patient/family/colleagues as appropriate and in a culturally safe manner.
Participate in nursing and education planning processes at a strategic and service level.
Lead and manage change processes within the team.
Effectively delegate activities taking in to consideration individual knowledge and skill levels.
Lead the standards of practice, protocols and policies for the service.
Effectively lead and manage the competency assessment process to ensure legislative, professional and organizational requirements are met.
Lead the staff in the achievement of their goals for the unit, service and division.
Participates on committees and task forces as assigned. Oversees and assure that committee's recommendations are implemented at the Nursing level.
Monitor patient volumes, quality of care, and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement
Maintains a departmental dashboard that includes information and progress on each performance indicators
Responsible for the ongoing quality/performance improvement processes related
to patient care.
Oversees control of positions and the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
Participate to develop a staffing plan that maintain as adequate staffing level in all nursing units.
Evaluates Deputy Nurse Manager performance. Mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed.
Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in departmental meetings and initiatives.
Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
Handles patient complaint and incidences involving nursing staff.
Investigate all the incidences received from QIPS and maintain the record for improvement through corrective and preventive actions.
Actively participate in budgeting process.
CLINICAL PRACTICE
Promote innovative and creative clinical nursing practice and ensure it is validated with best practice and research activities.
Role model clinical practice excellence including activities of continuous quality improve, audit and data collection.
Assess and effectively delegate activities taking into consideration individual's knowledge and skill level and monitor/audit progress.
Work collaboratively with all members of the health care team to ensure staff receives high quality educational input and support.
Promote patient and family focused approach.
Promote cost effective nursing practice.
Contribute to the development of standards of practice, protocols and policies for the service.
Demonstrate an ability to access and use available Health Management information systems
Work collaboratively with Clinical Services, Medical directorate, Quality and monitoring directorate, Infection Control, to maintain organizational standards.
Review and implement systems to ensure that processes to establish monitor and review the service specific standards of practice and indicators of clinical practice for nursing are established and maintained.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Identify a professional development plan for each management staff and work with them to achieve their objectives and goals.
Identify deficits in clinical and professional competencies of individuals and services and take appropriate action.
Work with the Nursing Education Services for education planning for staff.
Provide direct and/or indirect clinical support for New Graduate Registered Nurses and student nurses.
Ensures employees' complete awareness of the vision, mission and goals of the facility.
Participates in the planning, coordination and presentation of specific training and educational programs as appropriate to Quality Improvement needs of the facility or service.
Participates in conferences, workshops, symposiums and lectures related to Nursing administration and clinical practices
Initiates emergency, safety practices and fire safety measures as appropriate.
Serves as a professional role model and preceptor for new leadership, staff and students.
Establishes and implements a system that supports best practice patient care decisions, safe and efficient patient throughput and access to resources for the unit/clinical service area.
Incorporates the values of research and evidenced based practice and its application to the environment of care.
Contributes to the profession of nursing through leadership and participation in professional organization
Maintain and update own knowledge base related to clinical and/or educational specialty.
Attend educational opportunities and conferences relevant to the role and scope of practice and use this knowledge to improve practice.
Maintain currency with own competency and or credentialing assessment processes.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Develop ward workforce plan outlining New graduates, RN, interns and students
Ensure that patient allocation and model of care is based on appropriate skill mix and level of practice
Promote an Inter-disciplinary approach to the care.
Provide support and teaching to DM, HN, AHN, etc. to develop their supervision and delegation skills.
Lead the recruitment and selection process for the ward/campus.
Identify and implement a succession plan for the Nurse Manager role.
Work to identify current and future staffing resource requirements and develop strategies to address these.
Participate in budget planning process
Ensure sound processes are in place for stock control
