The Manager / Senior Manager, Database is a hands-on database leadership role responsible for the design, performance, security, and continuity of the institution's database environments and data architecture. Operating within a 24/7/365 healthcare environment, this role acts as the strategic owner of the organization's data layer, ensuring that database reliability and design integrity directly support uninterrupted patient care. The ideal candidate combines deep database expertise with strategic data architecture vision, proactively identifying and resolving issues before they affect clinical operations.
Key Responsibilities
Database Strategy & Architecture Leadership
• Establish a forward-looking database engineering roadmap aligned with hospital operations and mission-critical clinical applications.
• Lead database architecture design in alignment with application and integration requirements.
• Drive and execute the organization's database transition strategy, including migration planning from Oracle to open-source database platforms, while continuing to support existing MS SQL Server applications throughout the transition.
Database Management
• Oversee high-performance Oracle environments, ensuring data integrity, strict access controls, and sub-millisecond response times for EMR/HIS systems.
Database Design Governance & ERD Ownership
• Define and enforce database design best practices tailored to each application, selecting the appropriate approach based on the database engine in use, its non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, availability), database type (relational vs. non-relational), application architecture (monolithic, microservices, distributed), and underlying business needs.
• Serve as the single point of ownership for Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) across all applications developed in-house and all integrated third-party systems, ensuring data models are accurate, standardized, well-documented, and kept current as applications evolve.
• Partner with application development and integration teams during design phases to review and approve data models before implementation, preventing structural or performance issues downstream.
Healthcare Compliance & Risk Mitigation
• Enforce compliance with healthcare regulations and audit requirements across all database operations.
Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery
• Architect, test, and execute database backup and disaster recovery strategies to meet defined RPO/RTO targets, ensuring continuous service availability during disruptions, including ransomware or other cyber incidents.
Vendor, License & Patch Management
• Oversee database software vendors, licensing, and related service contracts.
• Manage database license compliance, renewals, and edition/feature entitlements across all environments.
• Plan and execute database patch and version management, including regular patching cycles, major version upgrades, and end-of-support/end-of-life planning, with minimal disruption to clinical operations.
Talent Development
• Lead and mentor a team of DBAs, fostering a culture of automation over ma
